Employee activity analytics: understand working time across the desktop

How Sync combines desktop activity, application context and AI explanations to help managers review working time, distractions and team patterns.

Start with the question: where did the workday go?

An employee can appear online while switching between a customer record, a spreadsheet, a meeting and an unrelated video. A manager needs more than an online indicator to understand that day. The useful questions are concrete: how much activity was recorded, which applications were involved, where did idle periods occur and how does that compare with the assigned shift?

Block Gemini Sync brings those questions into one desktop activity platform. It uses an installed desktop client, rather than relying on a browser extension. Configured application activity, active windows and available screen context across connected displays contribute to a timeline that updates as devices report. The manager can move from an organization overview to a team member and then to an activity window.

Read time, application use and screen context together

Begin with the period and team you want to review. Active time, idle time, focus sessions and application categories describe different parts of the working day. Shift information helps compare the recorded timeline with the schedule your organization configured. Device reporting and missing data matter: an offline device is not the same thing as a confirmed absence.

The same application can support different activities. A browser may contain a CRM, a business document, a training video or personal browsing. Sync uses an LLM to interpret the configured activity and screen context and provide a plain-language explanation alongside classification and confidence. Open the underlying activity window when you need to understand why a period was classified that way.

Identify unrelated browsing against your company policy

Set the application categories and organizational rules that reflect the work. Social media may be a required tool for a marketing employee and unrelated activity for a different role. A video can be approved training or entertainment. Clear categories make it easier to review time spent on business tasks versus time spent elsewhere.

For an illustrative customer-operations team, a manager might inspect a period categorized as unproductive, review the visible browser context and compare it with the assigned task. The next action could be correcting a category, clarifying the policy or discussing the activity with the employee. This is a workflow example, not a claim about a real employee or a customer result.

Use the AI explanation to find operational improvements

An activity explanation is useful beyond attendance. Repeated movement between a spreadsheet and a business application can identify a workflow worth investigating. Frequent context switches may point to interruptions, multiple responsibilities or fragmented tools. Review the pattern and speak with the team before choosing the remedy.

A manager could use these findings to simplify a process, protect a focus window or scope an automation with Block Gemini. Sync supplies activity evidence and AI-assisted interpretation; a suggestion to automate a workflow is not the same as an integration already being installed. Define the proposed change, system access and expected result separately.

Recognize strong patterns and help people improve

The organization dashboard brings trends, application mix and a team leaderboard together. Individual views add the day’s rhythm, shift information, score factors and coaching opportunities. These views help a manager recognize consistent patterns, investigate exceptions and have a more specific conversation about improvement.

If you use the leaderboard for recognition, agree comparable roles, periods and data coverage first. A score is a summary of configured signals, so read its factors and evidence rather than treating the number as a complete description of somebody’s contribution. Prize administration is an organizational decision; this guide does not imply Sync automatically awards or pays prizes.

Go from account to a useful first team view

The current plan is $7 USD per device per month. Create a Sync account, add the devices you need in Billing and enrol them using the desktop client. Configure the people, schedules, application categories and collection settings for your first team. Make the monitoring scope and review process clear to the people using those devices.

Check that devices are reporting and that expected applications and displays appear in the activity view. Inspect a normal working period, an idle period and a known non-work example against your configuration. Once the evidence is useful to the team responsible for reviewing it, expand the rollout. You can start in the product or ask Block Gemini to help plan your requirements.
